Why fleet owners, taxi operators and bus operators are installing dash cams even though there’s no RTO mandate for them.
Unlike AIS 140 GPS trackers and speed governors, dash cameras aren’t a legal requirement for commercial vehicles in Kerala — there’s no RTO mandate forcing you to fit one. Yet more and more fleet owners, taxi operators, and bus operators across Kerala are installing them anyway. Here’s why, and what to look for if you’re considering one.
Dash cameras sit in a different category from AIS 140 devices and speed governors, which are backed by central government notifications and enforced at RTO checkposts. A dash cam is a voluntary fitment — but “not mandatory” doesn’t mean “not useful.” For a vehicle that’s on the road for hours a day, carrying passengers or goods, the risk exposure is high enough that most operators who try a dash cam don’t go back to driving without one.
In a collision, footage settles disputes about fault in a way that witness statements rarely can. For insurance claims, a clear video of the moments before and after an accident speeds up settlement and protects you from inflated or false claims by the other party.
Staged accidents and deliberate confrontations aimed at commercial vehicles are a real risk, especially for taxis and goods carriers. Recorded footage is the clearest way to show what actually happened, rather than relying on your word against someone else’s.
Many dash cams include a parking-mode feature that keeps recording (or starts recording on motion/impact detection) while the vehicle is parked and the ignition is off. For vehicles parked overnight at a yard or on the street, this covers theft, vandalism, and hit-and-run damage you’d otherwise have no record of.
Kerala’s highways carry heavy night traffic, and footage from night drives is useful both for reviewing near-misses and for establishing exactly what happened in a low-visibility incident.
For fleet owners running multiple vehicles, dash cam footage is a practical way to review driving behaviour — harsh braking, lane discipline, speed around turns — and address it with drivers directly, rather than finding out about a problem only after an incident.
We install dash cameras alongside AIS 140 GPS trackers and speed governors for fleet owners across Cherthala, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, and Trivandrum. If you’re adding dash cams to vehicles that already have GPS/speed governor fitments, we can usually handle the installation in the same visit. Get in touch to discuss the right setup for your fleet.
We can usually fit them in the same visit as your GPS tracker or speed governor installation.
